Olenick Hosts First-Ever Girl Scouts Technology Workshop

In partnership with the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, Olenick recently provided a technology workshop to introduce young girls to the possibilities of pursuing a future in a STEM related career.

A group of six Olenick practitioners spent a lovely afternoon hosting a workshop on software testing, agile methodologies, and career opportunities in IT. The group of 40 Girl Scouts from various Chicagoland troops were engaged in a hands-on, high energy Lego4SCRUM workshop where they used collaboration, communication, and team building skills that centered on Agile/SCRUM principles.

At the end of the workshop, each girl received an Olenick STEM badge – a customized offering for our first-ever Girl Scouts workshop. The adoption of STEM badges was first introduced by the Girl Scouts of America in the summer of 2017 when they released 23 new STEM and outdoor badges to encourage young girls to broaden their interests in areas with historically less female representation (Girl Scouts of the United States of America, 2017).

The GSGCNWI workshop is just the beginning of an initiative that will continue to be a focal point of Olenick’s 2019 Diversity and Inclusion planning: inspiring young women to pursue their passions in the field of technology. We recognize the importance of engaging with females in IT – keeping young women’s interests sharp as they explore the possibilities of their future careers in technology is just one way to make an impact.

2019 holds many objectives for our Diversity group. This year, we look forward to building upon our veteran and diverse supplier designations, continuing to embrace inclusive practices in our corporate culture, and committing to develop and support a workforce representative of diverse communities.
